How to Stay Alert While Driving

If you drive long distances, chances are you have had moments where your mind wanders or you feel sleepy. A hot cup of coffee or just stopping to use the rest room can help you stay alert since the act of getting out of the car and walking around tends to keep the brain thinking.

Try These Other Hacks

We have found that a bag of sunflower seeds can keep your mind working for a great deal of traveling miles at little cost to you. Each sunflower takes some time and thought to open – just enough to keep you alert on your trip.

If you don’t like sunflower seeds, try grapes, raisins, trail mix, m&m’s, cut up pieces of fruit or other tiny snacks or treats that keep your hands moving and your mind thinking.  Your brain moves your fingers and anything that stimulates the brain is more likely to keep you awake.

Some say that some essential oils have properties that can help drivers stay awake.  Essential oils like these, may keep you from falling asleep and wrecking your car:

Amazon and other retailers have small diffusers for cars that plug right into the car. If you are using in your car while traveling apply about 5-6 drops on your diffuser pad. Insert into plug in your car’s adapter or cigarette lighter. Diffuse for no longer than 20 minutes in the car. Don’t have one, no worries, carry a bottle of essential oil with you and take a sniff. Some say it does wonders.

Other things that help are driving with the window down especially in the cooler months as cool air can help keep the eyes open. Singing at the top of your lungs to your favorite tunes might make you look a little nutty to the driver beside you but at least you won’t be colliding with them, a tree or a guard rail. And who cares anyway? Have some fun while staying awake.
