Cutting Roses to Keep the Blooms Coming
If you have a rosebush, you will be rewarded with gorgeous blooms for months. To keep your roses blooming, cut off the dying roses at least once a week. My mother always taught me, “Cut down to the third leaf.” But what does that mean? The next time you are outside, take a quick peak at your rosebush. Start looking down the stem from a rose. You will see leaf clusters, probably starting with two per stem. Continue down until you see at least three clusters of leaves on one branch. Cut just above that stem. This will encourage new growth and more beautiful roses!
