Cooking Substitutions
Allspice – Substitute 1 tablespoon Allspice with 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon.
Baking Powder – Substitute 2 tablespoons baking powder with 1 teaspoon Cream of Tartar and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
Butter – Substitute 1 cup butter with 7/8 cup lard.
Buttermilk – Replace buttermilk cup for cup with yogurt.
Corn Syrup – Dissolve 1 cup sugar in 1/4 cup of warm water to substitute 1 cup corn syrup.
Egg – 1 1/2 Tablespoons Water, 1 1/2 Tablespoons Oil and 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
Food Coloring – If you are decorating with icing and don’t have food coloring, add some powdered drink mix to your icing.
Oil – When baking, substitute mayonnaise for oil in equal amounts.
Whipped Cream – Substitute 1 1/2 cups cold evaporated milk and 1 teaspoon lemon juice for one cup of whipped cream.
